FYR review – This post features the restaurant ‘FYR’ (pronounced ‘fire’) – a quick lunch I had with my husband in town.

Note: FYR does not offer Love Dining benefits on FRIDAYS – keep this in mind if you plan on using Love Dining discounts!

FYR review: part of Amex Love Dining

This post is a review of FYR (pronounced ‘fire’) – a quick lunch I had with my husband in town.

I’ve loved the American Express Love Dining programme since forever – it gives me up to 50% off when I dine at participating restaurants.

While there are a few credit cards that give love dining privileges, my favourite is the Platinum Charge card, thanks to the multiple lifestyle benefits it brings.

AMEX Platinum Charge Card: starting my journey

When I read that FYR – a modern grill restaurant located along boon tat street – is part of the programme, I just had to drag my husband out to try their fare.

Restaurant and Menu

In the aftermath of COVID-19, the place was fairly quiet on a weekday afternoon.

Although the bar tender did say, that the area tends to be more lively at night, when patrons flock over after work hours.

The lunch menu at FYR was relatively simple – a few dishes, with a lunch set.

Note: set meals generally do not qualify for American Express love dining benefits. However, one can order any individual main course a la carte from the set menu, and FYR will simply charge the a la carte price for that item.

Mains: Duck Confit and Fish & Chips

Given how empty the restaurant was, our dishes soon arrived…

First up was my chosen dish – the Duck Leg Confit, served with sauteed onion, house salad, mashed potatoes, and peppercorn sauce – which I personally requested to be served on the side.

Duck Leg Confit

Note: ‘Confit’ is a kind of preserved food. It’s food that’s been cooked slowly – usually in grease, oil, or sugared water of some sort – as a method of preservation. Once done, the meat is generally kept sealed and covered with a preservative – rendered duck fat is a popular choice – and can be stored refrigerated for several weeks.

This process tenderizes the meat, and here at FYR, the duck meat was definitely tender, easily shredded, and softer than regular roast duck.

Next is my husband’s choice. An oldie but goodie: Fish and Chips.

When unsure what to order, my husband would generally go for idiot-proof options such as Burgers or Fish & Chips – they are generally tasty on average, and the good places would do them really well.

At FYR, these are served with salad, parsley, and homemade tartar sauce. The fish was well-fried generally. However it did not stand out.

Honestly, it wasn’t bad – but If you truly love Fish & Chips and want a more serious dish, it may be better to visit either  (i) a place that does it well, such as the Drunken Poet  (ii) an actual seafood restaurant – The Pelican is a good choice, or (iii) a place that specializes in Fish and Chips alone.

Dessert: Mango panna cotta

The husband was craving for coffee and dessert so we decided to share one. His pick of the day: Mango Panna Cotta.

Mango Panna Cotta

Panna Cotta is an Italian dessert of sweetened cream made to harden or set with gelatine. Here its served with vanilla essence, roasted nuts, berries, and mango sauce.

I’ve had panna cotta dessert at several Italian dining establishments before. While not necessarily the most outstanding – FYR serves the THICKEST panna cotta I’ve ever come across in Singapore. Most panna cotta tends to wobble a little ane be lighter in nature. But this one didn’t jiggle at all, and neither did it slide like yogurt. It was actually kind of rigid – pure creamy thickness galore. Kind of reminded us a little of rice pudding, but without the grainy bits.

FYR review overall and AMEX love dining (50% off)

FYR review overall: the food was alright. Not spectacular, but given the 50% off on dining, I’m not complaining. It was decent, quick, tasty, and satisfying enough for a quiet weekday lunch. The staff were also friendly and overall the experience was quite a pleasant one.
