This is my review of the Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy hotel. The husband, myself, and two children stayed here during my daughter’s birthday weekend.

American Express Travel Website

With a qualifying American Express credit card, one gets exclusive access to the Amex Travel website. It is similar to Expedia- a one stop travel portal whereby card holders can log into their account to make flight, hotel, and car rental bookings, and purchase travel bundles.

The card I own is the Amex Platinum Charge Card; I do love logging into the account occasionally to source for deals on the Amex Travel website.

To get a good deal, sometimes it means being patient and checking multiple sources to see if the same hotel/room is sold at the same price. I usually check

  • The original hotel website (in this case, as Grand Mercure is under Accor – I check the Accor Live Limitless App),
  • The rate on another 3rd party website such as Expedia or Agoda, and
  • The Amex Travel website – sometimes there are deals exclusively for American Express cardholders.

This round, it turned out that the Amex Travel website had the best deal – I literally managed to snag the room for SGD80.75 per night for two nights, and with GST the total rate came to SGD190.

I regret not doing a comparison screenshot back then between expedia and the Accor app. Sorry folks! But given that the usual rate for this hotel is about SGD 200 per night, whatever promotion I saw on the Amex Travel website became literally a no-brainer.

Anyway, a key reason for the low prices was back then – Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy was coming out of being a COVID-19 SHN (stay home notice) hotel, and starting to accept guests who were coming for local staycations. I was incredibly lucky – it was a case of right place and right time, on the right booking site.

When we arrived at the hotel, the lobby was literally empty, despite it being time for check-in.

The husband and kids waited shortly in the lounge area while I got us all checked in.

We soon received our key cards and made our way to our room.

    Superior King Room: Birthday Staycation

This stay at the Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy was to celebrate our child’s birthday and spend some quality time as a family. The four of us excitedly entered the room and were greeted with this sight.

    Hello and welcome

The Superior King Room is 32 squared meters / 344 square ft large. Which is a pretty standard-ish size as far as Singapore regular hotel rooms go.

King sized bed and a baby cot

For the five year old’s birthday, housekeeping had decorated the bed with balloons and a three-tiered towel cake. Which of course, made the kids really happy.

At the time of reservation, we requested a baby cot for the younger 1.5 year old.

I was impressed because even though this wasn’t a high end hotel, the staff tried to make it fun and memorable for the kids, even in small ways. Such as gifting each child a goodie bag.

It’s such a simple gesture but it is super  sweet – showing the kids that they are welcomed and are valued guests – it means the world to parents.

Back to the room. Here, by the floor-to-ceiling windows is an armchair and workdesk area.

And the view from the room: bird’s eye view of other people’s backyards. Lol.

View from the Room: High-rise apartments

Near the entrance is the closet and a coffee / tea making area.

    Drinks and Closet

Tucked inside the closet is a safe, more drawers, iron and ironing board (behind the bathrobes).

Amenities: Safe, Drawers, Iron, Ironing Board

The coffee and tea making facilities here are pretty basic –  just a kettle, some tea bags, and coffee satchets. No nespresso machine, but then again, this isn’t a five star hotel. Considering the prices, it’s not a big deal here – the simple amenties do the job well enough.

Coffee and Tea making facilities, and complimentary water bottles

The kids’ favourite thing within the first 15 minutes of settling in? Complimentary birthday cake.

    Birthday Cake

Another thoughtful gesture to make our stay special. The cake was ordinary but it’s again, the staff going the extra mile to make us guests happy is commendable here.

    Bathroom

The modern bathroom carried neutral tones of black, white and beige.

    Toilet and Sink

In some ways, the dark-coloured sink finishing (I’m not sure if it is marble, but looks like it) does give the bathroom a slightly more sophisticated feel.

The bath amenities are an in-house brand product: mercure and me. Feels like its almost bordering a marketing gimmick, but these smelled good and the body lotion is super smooth and carries traces of its milky soapy scent.

Bath Amenities by in-house brand: Mercure and Me

Yup, there’s a bathtub! We don’t have one in our own home – so the kids loved it.

And, stuck, against the bathroom wall on the inside is a tower hanger.

    Towel Storage… and a Senreve bag 😀

Overall, the room was pretty basic, but it served its purpose – our family could come together for quality time and relax.

    Facilities: Pool, Gym, Laundromat

The Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy’s facilities were basic but well-mained.

Pool-wise: there is a larger swimming pool, a smaller kiddy one, and a large open area for guests to rest / get sun taning done (though, considering Singapore’s heat, getting sunburnt seems more like it).

Swimming Pool: View from the Room

For most of the day, the pool is directly under the sun. So it tends to be deserted, and people come usually in the evenings. Even in the late evenings, the pool maintains a warm temperature.

Swimming Pool: View from Pool at eye level

There is also a fully-equipped gym. Again, for some reason, this was quite deserted (Again – perhaps few guests were at the hotel during the time I stayed, business might have picked up as COVID-19 restrictions increasingly ease up).

    Gym

Fun fact: the Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy hotel has a laundromat area.

This is super useful for guests who stay longer / travel really light, but don’t wish to pay for typical hotel dry cleaning services.

    Laundromat

The machines are token-operated. Tokens have to be purchased from concierge.

Instructions for coin operated laundry machines

We didn’t do laundry during this stay, but it was nice to have the option nevertheless. As a parent with two small children, the on-site laundromat facility can be incredibly helpful for packing lighter / dealing with kids’ messy emergencies.

Overall Thoughts: Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy

Our stay at the Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy was a simple but pleasant one. It was more than enough to make our five-year-old feel special, celebrate her birthday, and sufficient for the family to relax.

It also happens that the hotel is near East Coast Park. We rarely go there as we live in the other western end of Singapore, so coming here and exploring the East area was definitely a nice change.

Staff service was professional, and everyone was polite. I’m not sure again if it’s because of the low stay-density during the time we were there, so i can’t comment if the same level of service would be given say, if the hotel was full.

Generally happy to have gotten this deal from the Amex Travel website; the stay of SGD190 total (including tax) for x2 nights was definitly worth the price.
