Wan Hao Chinese Restaurant

The last time I blogged about Wan Hao Chinese Restaurant was over a year ago, in late 2023.

Since then, I’ve thought about their Dim Sum on and off, and only recently I’ve had the time and opportunity to visit again.

With a close friend, we made our way down to the Chinese dining establishment at Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza hotel.

Entrance to Wan Hao

A server greeted us at the entrance, confirmed our reservations, and brought us inside.

Seating Area

Note – reservations are almost a requirement here, especially on the weekends. I know of people who reserve a table here for dining in over 2-3 weeks in advance.

American Express voucher: 30% off

With the American Express Platinum Charge card, every year, upon payment of the annual fee, American Express sends card holders a lovely stack of vouchers, and this one is among the stack.

Wan Hao 30% off voucher

The voucher offers 30% off the entire bill.

Some exceptions apply e.g. to Premium or Seasonal Menus – be sure to confirm with the server beforehand about qualifying food items.

Usually, as Wan Hao offers Love Dining benefits, I normally use the 50% off for two adults. However, this time we wanted to eat Dim Sum, and Dim Sum does NOT qualify for Love Dining benefits.

BUT we could use the 30% off voucher for it – as such, we decided to go for that instead.

Dim Sum

The steamed Dim Sum options arrived nearly soon after we placed our orders – Wan Hao is certainly well prepared.

Round One… with many more to come

First was the fanciest vegetarian dumpling ever: this one tasted like the finest mushrooms from an exotic chinese forest.

(Probably not; the mushrooms were most likely farmed, but these dumplings are a testatment that vegetarian items can be good).

Steamed Crystal Spinach and Morel Mushroom Vegetarian Dumpling

One has to love the very classic Xiao Long Bao. Piping hot and liquidy inside, it was a match made in heaven with ginger strands and black chinese vinegar.

Steamed Pork Xiao Long Bao

Another classic: Char Siew Bao

Char Siew Bao (Steamed Honey Glazed Pork Bun)

Filled with rich honey-glazed pork on the inside that was oh-so-moist and rich in flavours, it went super well with the pillowy-soft bun.

Rich. Thick. Yummy.

If you’re in a big group of friends and want to have some controversy, get a pile of Chicken Feet. Most folks I know either love it or hate it. In our case, both my friend and I found it super delightful. Literally collagen falling off the bone.

And we have a fancy pants version of Loh Mai Gai (Glutinous Rice Chicken), wrapped up i lotus leaf.

Steamed Glutinous Rice wrapped in Lotus Leaf with Chicken, Conpoy, Salted Egg and Mushroom

It looked like a lump of rice on the outside – but the inside’s fillings were super generous: big chicken chunks, big conpoy mushroom pieces, a very present amount of salted egg and mushroom – all in all, super comforting and filling. It’s also rather large, so just having one is good to share for two to three people.

It was so good, I forgot to take a picture of the inside while eating. Oops.

One of the classic deep fried items: Carrot Cake.

The ones at Wan Hao were served so hot and crispy. Despite the XO Sauce – one can really taste the radish.

On to the most unique item of the day:Deep fried Taro Dumplings with Mini Abalone. Usually, fried taro dumplings tend to be filled with pork or char siew, but this one is graced with braised abalone on top, and scallop on the inside.

Seafood goodness + Taro = Da Bomb.

Deep-Fried Taro Dumpling with Mini Abalone

Super crispy and flakey on the outside but still melt in your mouth, accompanied with rich thick taro and the bits of scallop – all this was a joy in a bite. Or many bites.

Spot the Scallop

Ending the day with a couple of desserts – we first had some Baked Egg Tarts. As expected, these were smooth in the inside but super flakey on the outside. I honestly wish I had more.

Baked Egg Tart

Finally, we had the Charcoal Liu Sha Bao.

Liu Sha Bao (Steamed Charcoal Bun with Salted Egg Custard)

A fluffy soft black charcoal bun on the outside, and steamy, velvety, flowy, rich salted egg custard on the inside…. To really enjoy it, I truly recommend eating this LAST. The thick taste of salted egg custard is strong and really sticks around.

So Rich. So Sinful. So Good.

All in all, it was a wonderfully awesome meal. In my humble opinion, Wan Hao does some of the best Dim Sum in Singapore.

10/10 would definitely come again.
