Spizza review here! The whole family was out for this – so the husband, two kids, and myself were in the mood for pizza, and decided to try out Spizza in the bukit timah area.

Spizza review: Love Dining

There are two Spizza branches in Singapore – one at Bukit Timah Road, at Balmoral Plaza, and the other at Jalan Kayu. Both these outlets participate in Love Dining benefits, which gives a hefty discount up to 50% off  for dining in(read her for details!).

I’ve mentioned and raved about Love Dining endlessly on this blog – nearly all my personal Love Dining experiences have been positive or exceeded expectations; I really cannot recommend it enough.

AMEX Platinum Charge Card: starting my journey

With my American Express Platinum Charge card, the husband and myself (and our two kids tagged along) dined at 50% off.

Bukit Timah Spizza Branch

At the center of the restaurant was a tall counter and high chairs; it mimics the feel of a vintage pizzeria

This set up was a real novelty for young people and adults. However, parents with young children or the elderly may prefer regular seatings.

Outdoor seating was also available, but in this Spizza review, this place outdoors is (personally) a slight inconvenience – it directly faces the road, where cars just whiz by.

Menu

Spizza touts itself as a place that servces traditional Italian pizza. I’ve been to several Italian places for pizza, including LaBrezza (at St. Regis), Prego (Fairmont), and La Nonna – and the feel of Spizza is more Western (As in, Singaporean’s idea of western food) rather that classical Italian.

Their Menu can be found online here.

Fun fact: the pizzas here have fancy Italian (female) names.

Pizza Menu

Fun fact #2: there is a child set menu here. However, do note that child menu items do not qualify for Love Dining benefits – personally i find it more worth it to just order the adult portion IF you’ve got the Love Dining programme up your sleeve.

Child Set Menu

While waiting for the food to arrive, the kid was given something to play with – definitely a relief and joy for the parents.

Wikki Stix for the kid. Used to make various shapes – definitely made a kid happy

Food

In this Spizza review – the very first item to arrive at our table was “Yolanda”.

Pizza “Yolanda”

Yolanda is a delightful medly of tomato, mozzarella cheese, asparagus, sun-dried tomatoes, and egg.

More specifically, Sunny Side Up Egg

The pizza was a delight – a good mid of flavours came together in both sour (tomato) and crunchy bursts (asparagus) of flavours.

Mmmm. Egg.

We also ordered a set of fried chicken, to share.

10-Piece Pollo with sauces: Arrabbiata dip and Truffle Mayo

These were as enjoyable as fried chicken could be – well-fried, crispy, and piping hot, the sauces just gave it the little bit of oomph needed for the dish.

And then, the husband’s piping hot pasta dish – Gnocchi – arrived with the kid’s meal.

Gnocchi (left) and Kid’s Meal (right)

The husband wanted carbs and he chose a dish of Gnocchi. Named the “Gnocchi alla Mama Rosa” in the menu, it’s simply a dish of Gnocchi in Tomato and Cream sauce.

The dish was alright – not too spectacular, but not bad either.

Gnocchi alla Mama Rosa

Like father, like daughter – my four year old also chose a pasta dish for the kid’s meal.

It didn’t look very impressive, but the kid ate everything up, so we aren’t complaining.

Penne Carbonara and Juice

To end the meal, we desired something more sweet and comforting – so we ordered one tiramisu to share, along with some coffee.

Tiramisu

Again, the dessert wasn’t terrible – an ordinary but pleasant Tiramisu whereby you could taste the mascarporne cheese and coffee, but it wasn’t particularly memorable.

However, the Coffee and Hot Chocolate came in HUGE servings – see how the size of the cup is literally bigger than the tiramisu itself?

Overall Spizza Review

Food was generally alright. The best item of the day was defiitely the “Yolanda” pizza, but even then, I still preferred the Italian fare at other places that offered Love Dining benefits – including Basilico (Regent Hotel), LaBrezza (at St. Regis Singapore), Prego (Fairmont), and La Nonna – this place didn’t carry as strong Italian vibes. You can tell in the little things – from the mediocre tiramisu dessert to the coffee that felt like something I might have been able to make at home.

In comparison, real Italian restaurants tend to have better quality dessert – If i were to compare the Tiramisu I had at Burlmacco Ristorante to this, there is just No Comparison, Lol.

Still, it is a mid-range place and in terms of the price, you do pay for what you get. It’s not super excellent – BUT it is an idiot-proof restaurant if you’re a family with kids or if you just want some decent pizza or a quick grub to enjoy.
