Though, seats next to the windows tend to be in greater demand. If having a great view is important to you, I do recommend reservations and putting in a request for window seating.

Love Dining by Amex

As usual, the husband and I are out lunching again, and we usually chose Si Chuan Dou Hua if (i) we happen to both have work-related matters to settle in the city that day, and (ii) American Express Love Dining benefits mean that the both of us can dine at 50% off. Check out my Love Dining Guides for Hotel Dining  and Restaurant Dining for details!

I have the American Express Platinum Charge card – it’s one of those Amex cards that have Love Dining benefits. I can’t recommend Love Dining and the Platinum Charge card enough – it’s rewards are among the best I’ve seen in a credit card. Despites the hefty annual fee of SGD1712, the card is totally worth it because the perks are pretty hard to beat. Read more about the Amex Platinum Charge Card here:

    Settle in with Tea

Order their in-house tea (we chose Zheng Shan Tea) and you’ll be entertained with the tea pouring performance, right in front of your eyes.

A little plus point for Si Chuan Dou Hua – the restaurant gives you a basket / bag rest. It’s a small gesture but bag lovers will understand how much this means to us.

Okay so moving onto the food – the rest of this blogpost will feature the meals we had from TWO visitations to Si Chuan Dou Hua.

    Rice and Noodle dishes

Want a unique rice dish? The Fried Rice with Sliced American Wagyu Beef and Truffle Sauce topped with Poached Egg is a good one to try.

Fried Rice with Sliced American Wagyu Beef and Poached Egg…

Served in a (very hot) claypot, the rice comes almost sizzling. A server laid the bowl on the table, and drizzled fresh truffle sauce over it. Mix up the sauce or have it as it is. The fresh, tender, wagyu’s flavour is lifted with the truffle; the rice dish like this is so very comforting.

Alternatively, there are other rice options at Si Chuan Dou Hua. Such as the Fried Rice with Crab Meat and Dried Scallops and the Spicy Fried Rice in Fried Dace (fish) with Salted Black Beans and XO Sauce.

You can tell if a Chinese or Zhi Char restaurant is good by the fried rice it serves – is it piping hot with good quality ingredients and a rich flavour evenly distributed? Not too salty? Si Chuan Dou Hua does their rice well – it hits all the right places. You can’t go wrong with the fried rice here.

If one prefers noodles, the noodle choices here are pretty solid as well. Sometimes my husband craves for a noodle with a thick sauce; the Pan-fried Crispy Noodles with Seafood is his go-to on days like this.

    Pan-fried Crispy Noodles with Seafood

Loads of ingredients (seafood and vegetables) comes with a large serving of crunchy noodles (kind of like e-fu noodles but crispy) drowned in a richly flavoured thick sauce. There’s something incredibly soothing about this dish – lovely especially on a cold rainy day.

    Tofu and Meat dishes

Take a guess – what’s better than Rried Rice?

A hearty spicy tofu dish, served together with Fried Rice, of course.

Tofu + Fried Rice = Yums

The Bean Curd in Spicy Minced Meat Sauce (also known as Ma Po To Fu) here is more spicy than the average out there – great for us as we love our food spicy. For most locals (Singaporeans / Malaysians) this dish should give a decent amount of kick (though I should put a disclaimer that spice tolerance level is still a subjective matter).

Bean Curd in Spicy Minced Meat Sauce

I’m a traditionalist in the sense that I NEED rice to go with this dish. The silken tofu, in a thick spicy meat sauce – you absolutely need that rice to absorb and drown in the saucy goodness.

For variety’s sake, a little seafood appetizer that I highly recommend is the Deep Fried Taro Puff with Scallop in Curry Paste. It’s like the normal Taro Puff dimsum, but levelled up a hundred times. Sinfully crispy on the outside with heavy taro on the inside, this was actually my favourite item from Si Chuan Dou Hua.

To those who insist on more traditional proteins (i.e. meat), a Must-Try is the Braised Pork Belly in Homemade Brown Sauce (Dong Po Rou).
    Si Chuan Dou Hua review

Braised Pork Belly in Homemade Brown Sauce

Thick layers of Pork Belly that’s been simmered till melt-in-your-mouth softness comes alongside a plain bun (man tou) and nai bai vegetables. I manually stuff / marinade the buns with meat and sauce and the buns practically soak up all the braised meaty goodness. So rich, so good. Totally worth the calories.

Each order is one serving – so the husband and I ordered one each. We didn’t want to share; it was THAT good.

    Vegetables

After heavy carbs and deep-fried / sauce-laden proteins, the vegetables might feel like an afterthought at this point.

However, the vegetables / vegetarian options at Si Chuan Dou Hua do not disappoint.

Si Chuan Dou Hua review hou tou gu monkey mushroom

Mushroom Steak with Black Pepper Sauce

The Mushroom Steak with black pepper sauce is really from the vegetarian menu. It is touted here as a meat alternative / steak replacement.

A huge Monkey Head Mushroom (Hou Tou Gu) comes with brocolli, peppery sauce, and a little piece of mango on the top. Unlike most mushrooms, this one is super filling, and on the heavier side. The mushroom itself doesn’t have a strong distinctive taste, but the sauce more than makes up for it. Overall a really unique mushroomy dish.

Si Chuan Dou Hua review hou tou gu monkey mushroom

Chinese language literally translates it as the ‘Monkey Head Mushroom’(猴头菇)

However, quantities of these are limited – the restaurant doesn’t promise that it’s available. If you’re dead set on it, it’s best to call to reserve at least a day in advance.

    Cross-section slices

Want to try the Monkey Head Mushroom, but in a smaller portion? A great option is this stir fried vegetable dish: Stir Fried Monkey Head Mushroom with Vegetables

I think the name is pretty self-explanatory at this point.

Or, one can just choose to indulge in more rice-worthy accompaniments, such as the Eggplant with Minced Meat in Garlic Chilli Sauce.

This, like all the other dishes here – was really well done. Honestly – do expect to ingest more rice than usual if you’re here; the food here is just goes SO WELL with rice, and not everyone has the willpower to resist.

    Desserts

Sometimes, after pigging out, one gives up on the diet, goes all the way and dives into the dessert.

This is the story of my life. Lol.

    Desserts

Fortunately, dessert doesn’t have to be overly sweet or heavy. A cool and refreshing Black Herbal Jelly with Honey helps to avoid dessert overkill. We love just how light and easy it is. However, it is slightly bitter / medicinal in taste, so while we do love it, it is somewhat of an acquired taste on our part.

We asked the server to recommend something authentic and unique to try, and the Sichuan Pumpkin Pancake was on the list. (Not that I can really tell what ‘authentic sichuan’ really means).

    Sichuan Pumpkin Pancake

Honestly this somewhat resembled the sesame balls that I’ve seen in dimsum places. It’s more chewy and less crispy, and the pumpkin taste didn’t come out strongly. Not quite a fan personally, but again, I can see that some folks would truly enjoy something like this – it could be an acquired taste.

    Chewy and Pumpkin-y. Mmm.

Overall Thoughts of Si Chuan Dou Hua

Overall, lunching here has always been great. The food is satisfying, the service efficient, the views stunning, and the location is amazing for those working in the city. There are private rooms too, for either celebrations or corporate function.

The only real gripe that some may struggle with – is that there’s many non English-speaking staff. Several of the staff only speak Mandarin (plus Chinese dialects – I heard quite a bit of Cantonese and Hokkien in the restaurant). It’s not a problem for me as I’m fluent in Mandarin, but considering that this Restaurant is right in the Central Business District, there is some expectation that servers should at least speak some English. I’ve made phone calls to this place too, and the staff on the line was able to converse only in Mandarin / Dialect.

Neverthless, it’s something I can overlook as everything else is pretty exceptional, and not to mention, the sweet sweet 50% discount that comes with Amex Love Dining (see price breakdown and discount below).
