Hoshino Coffee Review: For this review, my family (husband, two kids, and myself) made TWO visitations to the dining establishment.

This is also my second blogpost featuring the outlet at Suntec City. For my first review, check out this post, and for those interested in the Jewel outlet, check out this other entry right here

Review of Hoshino Coffee: Entertainer App by HSBC

Hoshino Coffee has its origins in Japan. It is a Japanese-Western style cafe known for serving both Japanese dishes and desserts.

With the the Entertainer App by HSBC, at the time of writing, those with the app can redeem a benefit of 25% off the entire bill when dining in.

Note that the the 25% off applies to dine-in only. As such, while there is an online store for Hoshino Coffee, the discount does not apply to online orders.

The Restaurant

On two occassions, the family (husband, two kids, myself) visited the Hoshino Coffee outlet at Suntec City.

Entrance

The staff were always busy – you get the feeling that this place is slightly understaffed as it’s always full and the staff are in a perpetual rush. Nevertheless they do try their best to serve and promptly sat us down and brought us menus.

Menu

Occasionally, there may be seasonal menus that switch out every few months. At the time of our visitation, this was the seasonal menu:

Seasonal Menu when we visited – this is frequently subject to changes

Child Menu

As our children grow, they start to appreciate having their own set meals instead of sharing the parents’ food (and the parents appreciate that even more, trust me).

As such, whenever we come here, we usually order the kids’ set menu for the children.

Kids Menu options

There are several choices, but the one my kids love is the child curry omu rice set with ebi fry. Comes with a mini pancake and choice of juice.

Love the cutlery – such a cute fork and spoon set

It also comes with a mini syrup – kids can pour it over their own pancake. It’s little things like these that makes them (and parents) happy.

Spot the little syrup pitcher

The kids’ rice feels sweeter than the adult version of omu rice, possibly because there is more tomato sauce. Nevertheless its a savoury combo with the ebi fry and always a hit with our small children.

For this review of Hoshino Coffee, if anything, it is the child menu that hits all the right spots.

Food: Mains

Some of the main dishes have the options of a soup and salad add on, so if you just want a little bit more to eat, topping up these side dishes ($4.00 more) isn’t a bad move. The lobster bisque soup is especially good – thick and flavourful. If only the serving size was a little larger.

Salad and Lobster Bisque add on

Almost as a joke, in an attempt to try and enjoy more lobster bisque, we once ordered the Lobster Bisque Soup Spaghetti.

Lobster Bisque Soup Spaghetti

Unsurprisingly, it tasted similar to the lobster bisque soup. There was more shrimp in the dish itself – visually, it was hard to ascertain if the dish actually contained lobster pieces or not.
Still, enjoyable if you enjoy pasta in thick seafood-y sauce.

We also tried the Hoshino Pot Baked Curry Rice.

Hoshino Pot Bake Curry Rice

Basically, rice topped with brocolli, sausages, egg and drowned in Japanese curry sauce, baked with a layer of shredded cheese over.

Not really special, but not bad either, and quite comforting. The kind that’s best for rainy days.

Runny egg goodness

For a protein-rich dish, go for the Omu Rice and Teriyaki Chicken Steak with Salad

Again, not super special, but not bad at all – eggs were nice and fluffy, chicken was tender enough and charred just the right amount, and the teriyaki sauce wasn’t too sweet.
From the seasonal menu at that time: Teriyaki Salmon Sandwich

Salmon sandwich set

The stuffing was just the right amount of thickness: thick enough to be enjoyable but thin enough that it is still manageable.

Fries were piping hot. And despite the kids’ already having their own food, they decided to snack on the parents’ fries anyway. Ah well, with fries, who can blame them?

well-stuffed with salmon bits

And, the most instagrammable item of the day: Omu Souffle Salmon Mentaiko Risotto

The Egg Souffle bit was an impressive, wobbly eye-catcher when it arrived. Everyone had to poke it and giggled when it it wobbled.

Break it open, and an very light, airy, fluffly, almost bubbly kind of egg lightness burst forth over the creamed rice and vegetable mix at the bottom.

And the goodness burst forth

I might just order this for laughs in future. Above all, eating this was… FUN.

But jokes aside, if you love egg and cream-based rice, this was seriously enjoyable.
