This a review of Hoshino Coffee at Jewel, Changi Airport. Another meal for another family day – enjoyed by the husband, two kids, and myself.

For my other review of the Suntec City outlet, please refer to this post instead.

Hoshino Coffee review: 25% off with Entertainer App

Hoshino Coffee

Hoshino Coffee does originate in Japan. The food, while Western in style, uses Japanese ingredients and flavours, rendering it a special East-West fusion.

Or as my husband says, “It’s what Japanese people think Western food is”.

(Note: my husband IS a Japanese citizen. So when he says this,  I pretty much 100% take his words at face value)

So, we decided to visit this place for two reasons (i) our previous experience of the outlet @ Suntec city was a good one, and (ii) we get 25% off this place with the Entertainer app by HSBC.

Usually, we tend to visit places that participate in the Love Dining programme – so far it’s served us well. Most of our personal Love Dining Experiences have been wonderful or exceeded expectations.

One downside of Love Dining however, is that there is a limited number of participating places, and those places that DO participate tend to be high end or fine dining places in hotels. There are times when we do want to go to a more mid-range or low-key place, and the Entertainer App by HSBC is useful for that. It also has great variety, which is another plus point – check out my post here!

Restaurant and Menu

Hoshino Coffee @ Jewel does get crowded pretty early on in the day, and it’s not uncommon to see lines forming outside the restaurant at peak hours either.

However, it is a really beautiful place.

If you’re lucky, you might get to dine next to the waterfall vortex

At the time of visitation, my family and I were having a staycation not too far off, at Capri by Fraser, Changi City (read hotel reviews here!). So we came to Jewel in the morning and got here just before the restaurant actually opened.

It was a good decision to come early – we could sit wherever we wanted and ended up with a place right next to this view.

Menu-wise, within Singapore, there may be slight variations in Menu depending on which outlet you visit. Check out all menus from all outlets at their website here.

Occasionally, they do have seasonal of special / limited edition items. During our visit, the server proudly showed us the 8th anniversary menu, which had a number of additional stuff outside of the regular one.

Side Dishes

For every main dish ordered, there is an option to add on some sides – a mini soup and salad. We got the lobster bisque here – a rich and thick creamy drink, and our 3 year old loved this so much she drank it all up.

Mini Soup (Lobster Bisque) and Mini Salad

We felt like having fries, and at Hoshino Coffee, the fries come either with Wasabi Mayo or Mentaiko Mayo (with an option to top up $1.00 for additional sauce, but the amount given is really sufficient).

Hoshino French Fries with Mentaiko Mayo

We chose the Mentaiko Mayo; something unique and different. While the fries were nothing really special – they were GOOD but just regular fries – the sauce does jazz it up a bit and adds a lovely flavour to the fried potatoes.

Main Dishes

All it took for my husband’s decision – was to see a picture of a fluffy round egg blob atop creamy red spagetti, and his mind was set. Behold, the Souffle Egg Chilli Tomato Cream Spagetti.

Souffle Egg Chilli Tomato Cream Spagetti

The restaurant wasn’t kidding when they described the dish as a ‘Souffle’ Egg. Apart from being an instagram-worthy dish that generated loads of giggles and commentary from the three-year old, the adults were generally wowed at how soft the egg was. Light and fluffy, it resembled scrambled eggs on the inside except that it wasn’t heavy, and looked like the shape was supported by air.

Cut through the Souffle Egg. Entire thing remains fluffy

The pasta was alright – cream was good, above average, and the shrimp does make it very slightly more impressive, and its rice sauce added extra flavour to the eggs above.

The other main dish we ordered was the Chicken and Mozzarella Cutlet Plate.

Chicken and Mozzarella Cutlet Plate

A chicken chop, topped with cheese, rolled in panko bread crumbs and deep fried – it wasn’t spectacular (and in fact the meat was a little dry), but it wasn’t terrible either. The variety of items here – potatoes, rice, salad, pickles – did gave it a nice touch. Overall an average / okay dish.

Having said that, when we considered ALL the dishes, thanks to the huge variety and slightly above average standards, we generally had an enjoyable time sampling everything…

Nom Nom Nom

… And of course the ambience was a huge plus point.

People – don’t underestimate the power of a good view / ambience. Because we had two small kids who were suckers for the waterfall vortex, we ended up ordering a dessert just to justify sitting there for a longer period of time (there was a queue outside, and we genuinely would have felt bad otherwise… I know, we suck!)

Dessert – Double Matcha Pancake

I’m so glad that we decided to have dessert, after all.

Turned out that dessert was our favourite dish of the day – Hoshino Coffee’s souffle style pancakes.

Double Matcha Pancake, Souffle Style

These pancakes are baked rather than pan-fried, but do note that there’s a 20-minute waiting time. I highly recommend ordering dessert upfront with everything else OR if you didn’t, as in our case – to order it HALFWAY through the meal, just to cut down on any delay.

Topped with Matcha Ice Cream, Whipped Cream, and Black Beans

The pancakes do come as a single stack as well, but we chose the double stack as my husband and daughter wanted some to share. This was awesome – not too sweet, not dry, just cakey enough but light. I especially loved the matcha sauce – thick and bitter-sweet, it felt almost like an adult dessert that ignites inner squeals of child-like happiness.
Overall, an enjoyable afternoon with the family, a lovely meal, and we most certainly will be coming back.
