Amex Krisflyer Ascend Promotion

The deal: Get SGD $120 in statement credits when you (i) apply for the Amex Krisflyer Ascend credit card through a referral, and (ii) spend SGD2000 within the first 3 months of card approval.

Note: The referral must be completed and approved by American Express between 1 July 2021 – 30 September 2021 (both dates inclusive). The annual fee of SGD337.05 must also be paid in order to qualify for statement credit – however, it could be worth paying for depending on your circumstance, and i’ll get to that in a moment.

Other Welcome Offers

Some may balk at the idea of paying an annual fee of SGD337.05 to get only SGD120 in return – if you calculate the difference it feels like you’re paying SGD217.05 extra for it.

However, do consider that the Amex Krisflyer Ascend credit card comes with the following welcome offers:

  • 5000 Krisflyer miles – awarded the first time you charge to your card
  • Receive a complimentary stay at Sofitel Sentosa Resort & Spa, Luxury Room (worth up to S$460++) with a min. spend of S$5,000 in your first 3 months,
  • With the same qualifying spend of S$5000, you also get an additional 10, 000 KrisFlyer miles if you are new to American Express.
  • You will also earn 6,000 KrisFlyer miles based on the S$5,000 spend above (based on 1.2 KrisFlyer miles per S$1 spent locally).

There’s also these additional perks

  • Elite Silver Status for Hilton Honors hotel programme
  • Four complimentary passes to Airport Lounges each year
  • Accelerated upgrade to Krisflyer Elite Gold membership (To get this, make a spend of SGD15,000 on qualifying purchases on singaporeair.com in the first one year of card ownership. Krisflyer Elite Gold perks include: Extra 20kg luggage check-in allowance, Krisflyer Gold lounge access worldwide, and priority check-in/baggage handling/boarding during travels)

Is the Amex Krisflyer Ascend worth it?

While it’s a pity that travels are restricted thanks to COVID-19 and those travel perks are hard to use, personally, I still would say yes to the card, but under the following circumstances:

(i) you were planning to spend a large amount of money anyway (Need that 5k spend to get that staycation + extra bonus 10,000 miles)

(ii) if you love earning Krisflyer miles. The Amex Krisflyer Ascend credit card ranks among the best general spend for miles credit card, as it awards your spending with 1.2 KrisFlyer miles per dollar on qualifying purchases.

(iii) You enjoy staycations.

American Express periodically gives card holders statement credit if certain amounts are spent for for hotel stays (such as this one here where members get SGD100 cashback for every SGD500 spent at Conrad and Waldorf Astoria, and another example here whereby SGD75 in statement credit was given for SGD300 spent at Hilton hotels)

The qualifying welcome staycation gift at the Shangri-La Hotel Singapore is a lovely one. The Shangri-La has always been on my staycation wishlist. I have not personally had a one there, but I’ve heard great things about it.

I’ve also been to the high tea at the Rose Veranda a few times – it’s among the best high teas I’ve had in Singapore.

A note on MGM referrals

Typically, American Express has awesome MGM (Members Get Members) referral programmes, whereby card holders can refer others to apply for Amex credit cards – and BOTH people will get bonus points.

In fact, I openly share the MGM links on this blog – readers who have applied through my MGM referrals DO get additional perks that they would not have received through a regular referral. And for me, the benefits I’ve received as a result of referrals contribute to the running of this blog.
